Its main functions are the <strong>protection<\/strong> and <strong>lubrication<\/strong> of the other external eye structures <strong>against harmful agents<\/strong>, as well as immune defence. The most common harmful agents belong to one of <strong>three groups<\/strong>: <strong>allergens<\/strong>, <strong>microorganisms<\/strong> and <strong>toxic substances<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> is an inflammation of the conjunctiva triggered by allergens. The most obvious <strong>symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> are <strong>redness<\/strong>, <strong>pruritus<\/strong> (itching) and <strong>watery eyes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These symptoms are very bothersome and, when intense, can considerably limit day-to-day activities and interfere with <a href=\"https:\/\/filtrarte.com\/en\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-sleep-mechanisms-phases-and-cycles\/\">sleep<\/a>: a study in children with allergic conjunctivitis found poorer sleep quality in both the children and their parents. That is why a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important, not only to relieve the symptoms but also to prevent them from getting worse and to avoid complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we explain what allergic conjunctivitis is, how it differs from other types of conjunctivitis, how long it lasts, when you should see a doctor and what measures you can take to relieve and prevent the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:56px;margin-bottom:18px;font-size:clamp(26px, 2.4vw, 36px);line-height:1.25\">What is allergic conjunctivitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is estimated that at least <strong>20% of the population<\/strong> suffers from <strong>allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong>, according to a review published in the Revista Portuguesa de Imunoalergologia. This condition rarely occurs on its own: it is usually associated with other allergic diseases, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/filtrarte.com\/en\/allergic-rhinitis-what-it-is-causes-symptoms-prevention-and-treatment\/\">allergic rhinitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people with allergic rhinitis also have allergic conjunctivitis and, in a study carried out in Portuguese hospitals, around <strong>46%<\/strong> of patients with <strong>allergic conjunctivitis also had allergic rhinitis<\/strong>. This response causes intense inflammation, with the production of secretions (tears or nasal discharge) in an attempt to eliminate the unwanted substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:32px;margin-bottom:12px;font-size:clamp(20px, 1.6vw, 24px);line-height:1.25\">What causes allergic conjunctivitis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with other allergies, the <strong>triggers of allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> are harmless to most people. These two types of conjunctivitis can be more serious if they are not diagnosed and treated promptly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:56px;margin-bottom:18px;font-size:clamp(26px, 2.4vw, 36px);line-height:1.25\">What are the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> can vary in intensity and include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>red eyes<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>burning eyes with intense pruritus (itching)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>heavy tearing<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>oedema (swelling) of the eyelids<\/strong> and <strong>of the conjunctiva<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a gritty, \u201csandy\u201d feeling in the eyes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cthickening\u201d<\/strong> of the conjunctiva of the eyelids (mild papillary hypertrophy).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symptoms usually affect both eyes and may not all be present at the same time. Tearing and discomfort can make vision seem \u201chazy\u201d, but a persistent reduction in vision is a warning sign that needs medical assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sensitivity to light (photophobia) may also occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:32px;margin-bottom:12px;font-size:clamp(20px, 1.6vw, 24px);line-height:1.25\">Seasonal or persistent allergic conjunctivitis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like allergic rhinitis, <strong>allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> can be <strong>seasonal<\/strong>, related to pollination. Toxic conjunctivitis requires immediate and safe treatment, and infectious conjunctivitis requires a timely diagnosis and specific treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diagnosis should be made by a doctor and may require an examination by a specialist in ophthalmology or in allergy and clinical immunology, to ensure a more reliable and specific diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> is based on examination and, above all, on the medical history and the presence of other associated allergic diseases, such as rhinitis and <a href=\"https:\/\/filtrarte.com\/en\/allergic-asthma-what-it-is-symptoms-and-how-to-control-it\/\">allergic asthma<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In persistent or hard-to-control cases, blood tests to identify specific antibodies and skin prick tests with allergens (\u201callergy tests\u201d) may be needed. These tests help to identify the <strong>allergens responsible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:32px;margin-bottom:12px;font-size:clamp(20px, 1.6vw, 24px);line-height:1.25\">What is the difference between allergic and infectious conjunctivitis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Infectious conjunctivitis<\/strong> is caused by <strong>viruses<\/strong> (in most cases) or by <strong>bacteria<\/strong>. It may start in one eye and, according to SNS 24 (the Portuguese health service line), it is often the person themselves who spreads it to the other eye. Unlike the allergic form, it is contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some <strong>symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> are shared with infectious conjunctivitis, such as red eyes, watery eyes and a gritty, \u201csandy\u201d feeling in the eyes. Even so, there are important differences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Allergic conjunctivitis:<\/strong> there is often a history of allergy and, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, it usually causes <strong>intense itching<\/strong> and <strong>heavy tearing<\/strong> and affects <strong>both eyes<\/strong>; the eyelids may become puffy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infectious conjunctivitis:<\/strong> in the bacterial form, the discharge tends to be <strong>thick<\/strong> and <strong>yellowish or greenish<\/strong> and can make the eyes <strong>stick together<\/strong>, especially on waking; in the viral form, the discharge is usually watery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you suspect infectious conjunctivitis, wash your hands often and do not share towels, pillows or make-up, as recommended by SNS 24 and the NHS, to reduce the risk of passing it on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" This is the preferred approach, because of its good efficacy and limited systemic effects (acting throughout the body).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <strong>allergic conjunctivitis<\/strong> is associated with <strong>allergic rhinitis<\/strong>, an oral antihistamine may be recommended, with systemic action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main categories of drugs used are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>those that stop the allergic reaction cascade (antihistamines and mast cell stabilisers);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>those that reduce redness and swelling (vasoconstrictors);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>those that fight inflammation (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids), which should be used very judiciously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not use eye drops on your own initiative for long periods.
